I knew that he liked the New York Giants, my favorite team as well as his. A week before the attacks, he told me about a poll on who'd win the season-opening Monday night football game, the Giants or Broncos. Seventy-five percent chose the Broncos. So I looked at Shawn and said, "That means 75-percent of the people will be wrong come Tuesday morning." We shared a laugh and went back to work. That night, the Giants played good football but lost, and I looked forward to talking to Shawn in the morning about the game. That was the night before the attacks, before I even knew he was going to be away on vacation. God, how I wish the Giants won that night.
