I'm trying to learn about music in Iraq, both traditional and current. I've been reading about maqam singers. I'd love to hear Mo's Top Ten, and as much as you want to tell me about what the music of each means to you. For example, I am a fan of Ozzy Osbourne, a British heavy metal singer, but not because of his lyrics (some are really stupid) or his voice (really nasal and pinched) but because of his guitarists and drummers. That guy picks the best musicians to back him up, and Randy Rhoads was the best of them. His solos were melodic, ryhthmically complex and had structure. Few guitarists before or since can say the same. Emotionally, the solos sound connected to the mood of the song (sometimes angry, brooding or dark) but take on a life of their own, and you can hear spirit and life in them.
